Receiving an achievement award for academic excellence was the highlight of Mr Tanay Somaru’s first year at UKZN.

Studying for his Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting degree, Somaru received the honour during an awards ceremony hosted by the College of Law and Management Studies (CLMS) Unit of Teaching and Learning (UTL). The event recognised top-performing students in their inaugural year.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, Somaru said the experience broadened his perspective on potential opportunities for him based on his academic excellence and interests. ‘I believe that studying at UKZN will prepare me well for my future career by providing a strong academic foundation and the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in my chosen field.’

Somaru attributed his commitment to excellence to guidance he received from experienced professors – leaders in their respective fields – who fueled his drive to score high marks in his modules.

‘UKZN is home to a diverse student population, and it offers a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes cultural exchange and intellectual curiosity.’ he said. ‘Furthermore, UKZN offers a range of extracurricular activities that allows students to get involved in campus life and develop valuable skills outside of the classroom.’

His dedication to academic success is not a recent development. That is clear from his excellent matric results – where he obtained distinctions in English Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Business Studies and Life Orientation.

‘I was also placed in the Top 5 in the uMgungundlovu district, and was invited to the Provincial Awards Ceremony where I was awarded a certificate of merit by the premier of KwaZulu-Natal,’ he said.

Sharing insights into his study techniques, Somaru outlined a comprehensive approach to exam preparation, emphasising the importance of thorough material review, active study methods such as practice questions and flashcards, and summarizing information in his own words to enhance retention.

‘On the day of the exam, I would make sure to arrive early to avoid any stress or anxiety and always read through the instructions carefully and allocated my time wisely.’

He hopes his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring students looking to navigate the academic landscape with diligence and dedication in their first year.
