First-Year Student Determined to Help Fellow Students

Enrolled for Bachelor of Commerce Extended Curriculum General, Mr Luvuyo Mkhize

For Mr Luvuyo Mkhize, who is studying the Bachelor of Commerce Extended Curriculum General the path to academic success at UKZN has been driven by an unwavering belief in the ability to overcome challenges and a determination to help other students thrive.

Born and raised in the township of uMlazi, the 20-year old embodies resilience and a commitment to self-improvement – traits that have shaped his first-year experience.

Like many students in this cohort, Mkhize encountered some hurdles. ‘I almost failed to balance time for studying all my modules, especially Maths and Management.’ Seeking advice from friends and his first-year experience mentor however helped him adjust. ‘They gave me a valuable lesson about the institution, and I learned a lot,’ he adds, underscoring the importance of community and mentorship. ‘The respect from the lecturers gave me a purpose to do more’.

Looking to the future, Mkhize is ambitious and has a vision for how he wants to contribute to his community and the student body. ‘I want to build a strong network of contacts by attending workshops and networking events, improve my leadership skills, and achieve more academic awards,’ he said, detailing goals that go beyond his coursework, which include developing a website to assist first-year students facing difficulties. ‘I want to help students who are struggling to cope in their first years,’ he says.

Academically, Mkhize has found his footing, particularly excelling in one challenging module, Econ1CO. His approach to preparation has been strategic and disciplined. ‘In preparation for tests and exams, I ensure that I master each chapter and create questions for myself that I think might be asked,’ he said. Practicing past papers has been a key part of his process, guiding him in identifying knowledge gaps and reinforcing his understanding.

Choosing UKZN was no accident. His interest in his career choice has deep roots, nurtured by dreams and guidance from his mentors. ‘I always had a dream of being part of this career,’ he said, adding that it was also his “elders back at home” who pointed him toward UKZN as the ideal institution for his ambitions.
