Preparing well in advance for examinations has worked a treat for Mr Sandile Mchunu who excelled in matric, achieving 94% for mathematics!
‘In preparation for exams, I dedicate myself to understanding every concept taught in class from the beginning of the year. I consider the initial guidance from teachers as the foundation for all subsequent work,’ said Mchunu.
Born and bred in Nkandla, Mchunu says this tactic has also proven highly successful for him in achieving high grades for his first-year modules. He encourages first year students to follow suit and maintain the momentum that pushed them to choose the UKZN as their first choice.
He says the driving force behind his pursuit of a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting degree is his aspiration to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) and to make a meaningful impact in the world of work.
‘I chose UKZN because it is accredited by the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and has an excellent track record of producing CAs,’ he said.
Being accepted to study at UKZN was a particularly exciting moment for him as he felt it was recognition for all the hard work he put in at school.
Discussing his transition to university – often regarded as a ‘period of uncertainty and volatility’ – he said, ‘Although my first year at UKZN presented some challenges, I found it manageable with the help of First Year Experience mentors. These big brothers and sisters made me value time management which enabled me to focus and study diligently, as the responsibility lies with me to achieve academic success.’
Mchunu says he is committed to working hard and proving that no obstacle could hinder a person’s ability to make a difference in a community.
‘My ultimate goal is to secure training at one of the leading accounting firms in South Africa after graduating and become Chartered Accountant (SA).’said Mchunu
