Studying Ahead Works for First-Year Top Achiever

Mr Ayandiswa Khumalo

‘To manage my workload effectively, I adopted a proactive approach: studying ahead of time to absorb information thoroughly and identify knowledge gaps.’

So, said Mr Ayandiswa Khumalo, while sharing his top studying tips that helped him earn high marks in his first-year of study at UKZN. His academic strengths in Mathematics and Economics enabled him to identify effective strategies that he could apply to excel across his courses.

Khumalo described his time as a freshman as exceptional, largely due to the extensive support available for this group. He expressed gratitude to the first-year experience mentors who were invaluable in helping him navigate the significant transition from high school to university life.

‘Whenever there were challenges, mentors provided guidance on navigating obstacles,’ he said.

Initially, Khumalo had not considered UKZN as his first choice for furthering his studies because it offers a four-year programme, whereas other institutions provided him with a three-year option. ‘However, upon enrollment, I realised that UKZN was where I was meant to be. Many students who complete their studies in record time hail from this programme, and that’s my aspiration.’ he said.

Aspiring to become an accountant, Khumalo aims to secure a position at one of the top firms in the industry

‘My immediate goals are to graduate with distinctions in record time and secure a position at one of the Big Four accounting firms.’
